We had an opportunity recently to ask Gerry Murray, RevenueRecognition.com Managing Editor, about the original intent of the site and who visits.

Q: When and why did you start RevenueRecognition.com?

A: The site was started in 2002 to provide insight and expertise on revenue recognition accounting and related topics. The levels of scrutiny, complexity, and risk involved in reporting revenue have all increased drama - tically since then and the site has provided a lot of content to help educate finance professionals so they can better manage these challenges.

Q: How have most people found the site? If it’s search ... what are people looking for when they arrive?

A: Our audience is sophisticated and well versed in the technical matters of revenue accounting, so most people come to the site by searching for specific revenue recognition guidelines. Right now the most popular downloads are the Best Practices in Revenue Reporting survey and two whitepapers: SOP 97-2: Current Issues in VSOE Accounting and EITF 00-21: Revenue Arrangements with Multiple Deliverables.

Q: What’s the profile of your readers?

A: From the business side, our audience comprises CFOs, VPs,

Finance Directors, and Controllers. Other roles include people in charge of compliance, risk, treasury, and planning.

Q: Who are your contributors?

A: They tend to be leading auditors and consultants from top accounting firms — in addition to members of oversight boards such as the SEC and FASB. We try to find experts who can respond to what readers need to know. Everyone participating in our new Users’ Forums is a potential contributor, so we are all benefiting from the know-how of a range of professional advisors and senior revenue management practitioners.
